(AP) - Randy Moss burned Dallas early, catching a 79-yard pass on Oakland's second play. After that, his biggest contribution to the Raiders' first win came in the running game.

But the talented receiver didn't run a long reverse or throw a big downfield block. Instead, his presence kept the Cowboys' safeties away from the line.

Enter LaMont Jordan.

The Raiders' other big acquisition on offense ran for a career-high 126 yards and a score, Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals and Oakland's defense mounted a late goal-line stand in a 19-13 win Sunday.

''I will forever look at it as teams saying we can't run the ball,'' said Jordan, who bounced back from a 19-yard performance last week against Philadelphia. ''I encourage defenses to play that way. If you play two-deep defense against us with the way we're capable of running the ball ... we are going to run the ball down your throat. I think today was a true test of that.''

A week after gaining just 21 yards as a team, Jordan and the offensive line took it upon themselves to fix the running game. They succeeded from the start, as Jordan frequently got tough yards up the middle.

''We were determined to get running yards, especially after being shut down last week,'' offensive lineman Barry Sims said. ''We really wanted to get LaMont going. And you can't go when there's no where to go, so we really wanted to get some lanes opened up for him.''

The Cowboys kept it interesting until the final 2 minutes. Trailing 19-13 after Janikowski's 43-yard field goal with 4:29 left, Dallas (2-2) drove inside the 5 with help from a 57-yard pass from Drew Bledsoe to Terry Glenn.

But Tommy Kelly dropped Julius Jones for a 2-yard loss on second down from the 3, and Bledsoe followed with incompletions to Keyshawn Johnson and Glenn to turn it over with 1:45 to go.

Jason Witten was open in the end zone on the last play, but Bledsoe said he had chosen to go toward Glenn's side and didn't see Witten.

''It's a three-step drop. He just has to make a decision to go the other way with the ball,'' Witten said. ''I'm not doubting his decision. He's got Keyshawn and Terry over there. He's got to make a quick decision and go with it. I was open. That's for sure.''

Jordan then ran twice for a first down and Oakland (1-3) ran out the clock, heading into the bye week with a much-needed win.

Kerry Collins threw to Moss only three times in the opening half, connecting on the long pass on the first drive to set up Janikowski's 30-yard field goal and throwing his direction on back-to-back plays to open the second quarter.

Moss, who had 10 touchdowns in his first five games against Dallas, finished with four receptions for 123 yards and remained unbeaten in six games against the Cowboys.

Collins finished 13-for-23 for 218 yards, extending his streak without an interception to a career-high 149 passes, dating to last season.

''I definitely didn't play my best game today but I didn't turn it over and I made some smart decisions at times that ultimately helped us win the ballgame,'' Collins said. ''The other guys picked me up today. LaMont and the other guys up front did an excellent job.''

Oakland's defense played a big role too, holding Jones to 76 yards on 22 carries and limiting Dallas to 146 yards through three quarters.

''I know they think Julius Jones is the next Emmitt Smith,'' Oakland safety Stuart Schweigert said. ''I played against the guy in college and he's a good running back but he's not a great running back. We knew we were going to shut down the running. That allowed us to get some sacks and pressure on Bledsoe.''

Janikowski, who missed four field goals the first three games, kicked short field goals in the first half and a 49- and 43-yarder in the fourth quarter.

''I didn't change a thing,'' Janikowski said. ''I worked the whole week with the same approach I always do.''

Bledsoe hit Patrick Crayton on a 63-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to make it 16-13. Bledsoe finished 11-for-26 for 212 yards.

''We feel like we missed out on an opportunity here,'' Bledsoe said. But is it also a preview of Super Bowl XL?

There won't be quite as much at stake Sunday as there was the last time the Panthers and Patriots met.

By John Zich, USA TODAY

Conventional wisdom in the unpredictable NFL before the season went like this: New England probably will fall just short in its bid for three consecutive Super Bowls and the finally healthy Panthers probably will have a deep postseason run, perhaps reaching the pinnacle.

They meet in Charlotte, with the 1-0 Patriots feeling much better about things than the Panthers, who are 0-1 and coping with the season-ending injury to Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins.

Week 2 offers that bit of intrigue as well as another: Terrell Owens playing for the first time against his former team when the San Francisco 49ers visit Owens' Philadelphia Eagles.

Just 19 months have passed since the Patriots won in a thrilling finish, beating Carolina for their second Lombardi Trophy. Numerous injuries in 2004 derailed the Panthers, and they lost last weekend on a last-second field goal by the fired-up New Orleans Saints.

"We had some expectations coming into the season," Carolina safety Mike Minter says, "and we definitely wanted to start off on a better note."

Says Patriots coach Bill Belichick, "We know what they are capable of as well as anybody."

The same goes for many of the 49ers regarding Owens, the wideout who spent his first eight seasons in San Francisco.

Earlier this week 49ers linebacker Derek Smith had little good to say about his former teammate, dismissing him as a player who put himself above the team.

"Derek is an emotional person that takes a lot of pride in his own performance," first-year coach Mike Nolan says. "He was asked the question, and he felt for some reason that he had to be honest in answering it, and he was."

Chiefs-Raiders should make for good TV

It's opening day at the Black Hole, and visitors are welcome ...

Welcome to be devoured, that is.

For nine of the last 10 years, the Oakland Raiders have begun their home schedule with a win. Taking full notice is Kansas City Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, whose team will be in Oakland this weekend.

"Those numbers in themselves," Vermeil says, "are scary."

So are those infamous Raiders fans who gather in the end-zone seats with their painted faces and gladiator props.

This time, though, the Raiders greet a team, an AFC West foe, that not only has beaten them four consecutive times but also is their only home-opening blemish the past decade. The Chiefs won 28-27 in 1997.

In the latest installment of a rivalry that began in 1960 and has been contested 92 times, the Raiders and ballyhooed acquisition Randy Moss find themselves 0-1 after dropping their opener at New England. Kansas City began work with a win against the New York Jets.

But Chiefs quarterback Trent Green knows exactly what awaits him and his teammates.

"Everybody is going to be hyped up, (and) the crowd will be going crazy," he says. "It's national television, Sunday night prime time. We're going to get their best."

More oakland news

GRETZ: Chiefs-Raiders: It's About Al

Sep 16, 2005, 8:40:20 AM by Bob Gretz - FAQ

Let’s be honest here: the level of ferocity in the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry is not what it once was. No matter how much the tradition of Raiders Week has been handed down, it does not match the 1990s when first Marty Schottenheimer and then Gunther Cunningham lit the torch twice a year and turned up the flame higher and higher each day, right up until kickoff.

It was personal with those two guys. Schottenheimer competed against the Raiders as a player, an assistant coach and head coach. He grew to despise their outlaw attitude and took delicious joy in beating them; nobody has dominated the Raiders the way the Chiefs did during Schottenheimer’s tenure as head coach. From 1989 through 1998, they beat the Raiders in 18 of 21 games played and in 1991 they beat the silver and black three times. No other opponent has ever beaten the Oakland-Los Angeles-Oakland Raiders three times in one season.

But all that is another part of Chiefs-Raiders history. These days, Carl Peterson has a certain walk to his step during Raiders Week. It’s become personal with him. Lamar Hunt looks forward to these games each year; it’s been personal with him for a long time.

It’s hard to believe that Dick Vermeil is going to work up a good game-day hate for any opponent. That’s not Vermeil, it’s not his personality. Oh, he wants to whip the silver and black, but that has more to do with them being a divisional opponent than it does the fact they carry the torch of the Raiders franchise.

And let’s be honest about something else here: there’s no way to work up a good hate against the Raiders without working up a lather over Al Davis. Make no mistake about it, Al Davis is the Raiders, and the Raiders are Al Davis. That’s never changed, and never will. Ultimately, it will take his passage into the league of another world before the Raiders are not Al Davis.

A minor example: when the Raiders began play in the early 1960s, they wore uniforms of silver, black and gold. Once Davis took over, he eliminated the gold. Reason? He’s color blind. Dark and light are all he can make out. Thus the Raiders have been the silver and black. Everything, down to their colors has been cast by him.

This is the man who once said he would rather be feared than respected. Well, Davis hasn’t been feared for years around the Chiefs. Maybe it’s because there are so many people around Arrowhead Stadium who have worked with him and know him well. It starts with Vermeil’s right-hand man, Mike White. He spent seven years there and was the Raiders head coach in 1995-96. Cunningham spent four years there on the coaching staff. Frank Gansz, Jr. worked two years there as special teams coach. Heck, offensive coordinator Al Saunders interviewed with Davis for the head coaching position, but begged out. The job eventually went to Norv Turner.

Much to Davis’ chagrin, there’s respect for him around the Chiefs, not fear. There’s no denying his impact on the game, the league and the business. Much of that has been good. When it comes to diversity, he’s a league leader. He doesn’t care about the color of a man’s skin, only his abilities. Or her ability; in a league dominated by men, the Raiders organization is run by a woman.

But the one thing that always goes with Davis’ good is the bad. It’s not just the lawsuits against the league and his partners, his stealing the Raiders away from Oakland and then taking them back. It’s much more than that.

I got my feet wet in the business of writing about football covering the Steelers of the late 1970s. What great teams they were, with great players and they all disliked Al Davis. Reason? Davis and his Raiders were the Steelers biggest rival, even bigger most years than the near by Cleveland Browns.

Still, I always kind of liked the way his teams played football. I always thought the Raiders had to be a great place to work if you were a coach and player. He always seemed to take care of his players, even the ones who had left the game. Everybody always remained a “Raider” and his coaching staffs always had some of the brightest talents in the business.

How wet behind the ears I was. Back in the mid-1980s, after covering a Chiefs-Raiders game at the L.A. Coliseum, I joined my colleague at the Kansas City Times & Star Kent Pulliam and we went to Sunday night dinner with a member of the Chiefs scouting staff who was on the west coast looking at college players. We met at a Mexican restaurant in Marina del Rey, out by LAX Airport, called I believe Café Escobar.

Turned out, it was a hangout for the Raiders front office. As we walked in, our friend the scout was greeted by two assistant coaches on the Raiders staff at that time. They had all worked together in the league at one point, and without introductions, we all sat down together.

Already about two margaritas ahead of us, it took no more than five seconds for these two guys to start unloading their baggage on how difficult it was to work for Davis. They talked of late night phone calls that forced changes in game plans, of constant second guessing, of players going behind the coaches back directly to Davis, of office staff spying on the assistant coaches, of one assistant coach on the staff who spied on the others and reported directly to Davis. Our friend the scout kept trying to cut them off, trying to bring a halt their rant. When they finally took a breath, we were introduced as newspaper reporters.

The two coaches looked horrified, shrugged their shoulders, took another drink from their margaritas and continued on with their litany of problems working for Davis. I can remember walking away from the restaurant thinking “why would anybody work for this guy.”

Over the years, those stories have only been doubled, tripled and quadrupled by others who have chosen to work for Davis and lived to tell about it. Some would call him demanding. Others would call him demeaning.

There was a time when that personality created fear, not only with the Raiders, but around the league. That time has passed.

And when Al Davis passes, the Raiders will be just another football team.

The opinions offered in this column do not necessarily reflect those of the Kansas City Chiefs.

A former beat reporter who covered the Pittsburgh Steelers durin

Oakland News

Another night sellout for Raiders

By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER

ALAMEDA — There will be no blackout.

Not this week, at least.

An Oakland Raiders spokesman announced Thursday the Raiders had sold enough tickets to declare a sellout for their home opener Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, meaning the game will be televised locally.

The game will be shown on ESPN, as well as KBHK-TV (Channel 44), starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Raiders entered the season with 54 blackouts in 80 regular-season games since returning to Oakland in 1995. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, Fancher shared her story in a three-part television series called "Faith's Story" and helped raise awareness and money to fight the disease for seven years.

A portion of the proceeds from the caps will raise money to help support women in the community with breast cancer.

The caps, priced at $19.99, will be sold at Sunday night's Chiefs-Raiders game at McAfee Coliseum, at Raider Image stores and are available online at

Raiders.com.

KEEPING IT COOL: Raiders offensive tackle Barry Sims could only shake his head at the pregame brawl Monday night between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons.

Philadelphia linebacker Jeremiah Trotter and Falcons cornerback Robert Mathis were ejected.

"That's ridiculous. The league made it known that type of behavior wasn't going to be tolerated, and those guys have been in the league long enough that they should know better," Sims said. "You've really got to take care of that stuff on the field. It's kind of selfish, I mean, Philadelphia really missed Trotter, and for them to come out with a loss, you can't help but wonder if that was a contributing factor to that."

SINGLE DIGIT SALUTE: For the second straight year, Kansas City coach Dick Vermeil trotted out a one-liner about Oakland fans that drew a laugh among the local media at his Monday press conference.

"I know that Raider fans as you go through the parking lot are just the opposite of going through Green Bay's lot," Vermeil said. "In Green Bay, it's, 'Hey, good luck, coach, hope you have a good game.' I'll tell you this — at the Raiders, they have only one finger."

EXTRA POINTS: The Raiders reported no change in their injury status. WR Doug Gabriel (finger) is questionable, while RB Justin Fargas (knee), QB Kerry Collins and WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) are probable. Gabriel said had no idea if he might play against Kansas City, placing a blank business card near his locker and saying, "If you find out, write it here and leave it for me," Gabriel said. ... Chiefs DT Ryan Sims (sprained foot) was downgraded to questionable, meaning he is likely out of Sunday night's game. John Browning would start in his place. FB Tony Richardson (ankle, knee) and OT Willie Roaf (hamstring) did not practice and are listed as questionable.

Monday night debacle... er, final

Eagles 10
Falcons 14
Final

Senior Bro (Dad), signing off

Who needs Yahoo Sports?

...When we've got Ben's blog to give us all the sports scores!
